Declined contactless payments

Contactless payment not working with your Pleo card is usually due to the payment terminal’s settings or normal card security checks.


  • Having a declined payment that isn’t contactless? Make sure to follow these steps
  • If you’re being asked to insert the card and don’t know your PIN, follow the steps to find the card PIN code

What to try first

  1. Use chip & PIN
    Insert your card and enter your PIN. After several contactless taps, chip & PIN may be required due to security checks or terminal rules.
  2. Try another terminal (or ask the merchant to restart)
    Not all readers have contactless enabled or configured correctly
  3. Use a digital wallet (if available)
    Try Apple Pay or Google Pay instead of tapping your physical card. If you already use one, try removing and re-adding the card.
  4. Check with the merchant
    Confirm whether their terminal supports contactless and if there are any restrictions for commercial Mastercard cards.

If the issue persists

  • Try paying with another method if available
  • Check if contactless works at other merchants
    • If it works elsewhere, the issue is likely with the merchant’s terminal
    • If it fails everywhere, use chip & PIN
    • If chip & PIN also fails, contact Pleo Support


Common reasons this happens:

  • Terminal doesn’t support contactless
    Not all terminals support contactless payments. If the contactless symbol isn’t visible, you may need to use chip & PIN.
  • Limits or security checks
    Contactless payments are subject to limits and security rules that vary by country and terminal. This may result in:
    • A maximum amount per contactless transaction
    • A limit on consecutive contactless payments  (the exact number can vary)
